Meet new Dr Lewis Ferguson -The new dentist appointed to the Central West Hospital and Health Service at Longreach.
Dr Ferguson previously was based at Toowoomba.
Central West Health General Manager of Acute Health Services Craig Carey says the region’s three full-time dentists were supported by a dental therapist, several dental assistants and an administrative officer.
“Our oral health team provides a range of services through the Barcaldine and Longreach clinics, and through outreach clinics across the hospital and health service,’’ he said.
“Services include dental check-ups and treatments, emergency dental treatment, dental X-rays and dentures.
“The Barcaldine Dental Unit also provides fee-based dental appointments to non-eligible patients on Monday and Wednesday afternoon each week.
“Members of the community can access these services by calling 4650 4077.’’
Dr Ferguson, who grew up in country Victoria, said he had been keen to embrace the opportunity to contribute to oral health care in a rural environment such as the Central West.
“I’m looking forward to joining in with local community activities and start playing tennis.’’
Dr Ferguson also enjoys triathlons and running.
He specialises in dealing with anxious patients and works to provide a positive experience by treating conditions with modern and minimally invasive procedures.
He also has a special interest in children’s oral health and has some tips for families whose children are about to visit the dentist.
“If a child is anxious about visiting the dentist for treatment, discuss the visit – though not too much – using confident and positive language.’’
“The more you remind them of what it is not like, the more anxious they become so keep the details simple and easy to understand.’’
Mr Carey says Dr Ferguson is a welcome addition to the Central West’s oral health team and will soon be getting around the region with outreach clinics.
